Born Onika Tanya Maraj, Nicki Minaj stepped onto the scene as a female rap artist with record breaking sales. Her studio album, Pink Friday released in 2010, peaked at number one on the U.S Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America a month after its release.

Nicki became the first solo female artist to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. Her seventh single "Super Base" has been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA, and has sold more than four million copies, becoming one of the best selling singles in the United States.

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded released in 2012 Minaj’s second album, toped charts internationally. The album became one of the best selling albums of 2012 according to the Nielsen SoundScan, selling one million copies worldwide. And "Starships" became one of the best selling singles of that year.

Far from the female rappers I’m use to there is no doubt that she can produce hits but who is Nicki Minaj? The self proclaimed Barbie has several alter egos, accents and costumery in her attire it’s hard to define her personality. When it comes to style Cyndi Lauper comes to mind, with colorful hair and outlandish clothing, the 80’s pop singer was reinvented by Nicki.  With that being said, is the artist know as Nicki Minaj Pop or Hip Hop?
